Engine oil change on Defender Td4 2.2 DPF

Vehicle ➔ Defender 90 Td4 2013
Difficulty ➔ Medium

Time ➔ 2 hours
Summary

This tutorial only concerns Defender Td4 2.2 up to VIN number DA444246. From VIN DA444247 the oil filter has been modified.

The Defender Td4 2013 is equipped with a DPF (diesel particulate filter). Therefore, it is important to choose the right engine oil carefully.

Oil recommended by Land Rover ➔ SAE 5W30 specification Ford WSS-M2C934-B.

On our Defender Td4, we use alternatively depending on availability :
• Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF-L 5W30 (ACEA C1 / Ford WSS-M2C934-B / STJLR.03.5005).
• Total Quartz Ineo C1 5W30 (ACEA C1 / Ford WSS-M2C934-B).
• Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF-L 5W30 (ACEA C1 / Ford WSS-M2C934-B / STJLR.03.5005).
• Total Quartz Ineo C1 5W30 (ACEA C1 / Ford WSS-M2C934-B).

Land Rover recommends changing the engine oil every 20,000 km or every year, whichever comes first.
We change the engine oil on our Defender Td4 every 10,000 km.
We change the engine oil on our Defender Td4 every 10,000 km.

Oil volume required for oil change ➔ 7 liters.

Before draining, drive a few kilometers to warm up the oil. The oil will then be more fluid and will drain better.

Used oils, brake fluids, seals and filters are hazardous waste for the environment. They must in no circumstances be thrown neither in the natural environment, nor in the sanitation network, nor in household waste. They must be deposited in a recycling center.

On the Defender Td4, it is impossible to change only the sealing washer because it is integrated into the drain plug. It is therefore recommended to install a new plug at each oil change.

The only spare parts needed for the Defender Td4 engine oil change are the drain plug and the oil filter. As for me, I prefer to buy the Td4 service kit (DA6040P) and also change the air filter and the fuel filter during the oil change. The letter ''P'' indicates that this kit includes ''Premium'' filters. These are filters from major brands with a good quality/price ratio.

From VIN number DA444247, Land Rover modified the oil filter fitted to the Defender Td4 2.2. The reference of the new filter is LR058104 and the reference of the corresponding service kit is DA6109P.

Drain the engine oil
Op 01
Open the bonnet
Remove the oil filler cap. Unscrew by hand.

Removing the oil filler cap will facilitate the flow of oil.
Op 02
Locate the drain plug (1st photo).
Place a drain pan under the engine oil sump.

The oil will flow abundantly towards the rear. Provide a large capacity pan and position it accordingly.
Op 03
Unscrew the drain plug. Use the 13 mm socket.
Let the oil drain.
Discard the drain plug.

The oil and drain plug are very hot. Be careful not to burn yourself.

When the oil has drained, you can fit the oil filler cap.

Change the oil filter
Op 04
Locate the oil filter (1st photo).
Place a 2nd drain pan underneath.
Op 05
Unscrew the oil filter cover only 2 or 3 turns. Use the 27 mm socket.
Let the oil drain into the pan.
Op 06
Finish unscrewing the oil filter cover and remove it. Unscrew by hand.

The oil filter will come with the cover because it is clipped to the bottom of the cover.
Op 07
Remove the filter from the cover. Pull by hand.

Do not hesitate to pull very hard.
Op 08
Remove the cover O-ring. Use a small flathead screwdriver.
Op 09
Thoroughly clean the oil filter cover.
Op 10
Lubricate the new O-ring (DA6040P kit) with new engine oil.
Fit the O-ring on the filter cover.

The O-ring is in the same box as the oil filter.
Op 11
Engage the new filter (DA6040P kit) in the cover.
Push firmly by hand to engage the filter on its support.
Op 12
Thoroughly clean the filter contact surface.
Op 13
Screw on the oil filter cover. Screw by hand.
Tighten to a torque of 25 mN. Use the 27 mm socket and the torque wrench.

The workshop manual recommends a tightening torque of 35 mN and 25 mN is engraved on the filter cover. I preferred to follow the recommendation mentioned on the cover.

If you do not have a torque wrench, do not overtighten the oil filter cover. Indeed, it is made of plastic and may break.

Op 14
Lubricate the seal of the new drain plug (DA6040P kit) with new engine oil.
Screw in the new drain plug. Screw by hand.
Tighten to a torque of 23 mN. Use the 13 mm socket and the torque wrench.
Op 15
Pour 6 liters of oil into the engine.
Fit the oil filler cap. Screw in by hand.
Op 16
Start the engine for a few seconds. Turn off the engine.
Check the oil level. Use the dipstick.
Add engine oil if necessary until approaching the ''max'' mark on the dipstick.
Check that there are no leaks at the oil filter and the drain plug.

After turning off the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the engine oil sump before checking the oil level. If you do not respect this delay, the level reading may be distorted.

Do not exceed the maximum oil level (''max'' mark). This could damage the engine.

When the oil is new, it is almost impossible to see the level on the dipstick. Pay close attention.
Op 17
Drive a few kilometers with the vehicle.
Check the oil level again and the absence of leaks at the oil filter and the drain plug.
