Fuel filter change on Defender Td4 2.2

Vehicle ➔ Defender 90 Td4 2013
Difficulty ➔ Easy

Time ➔ 30 minutes
Summary

Throughout this intervention on the fuel filter, be careful not to let any impurities enter the fuel system. This could damage the injection system.

Changing the fuel filter causes air to enter the fuel system. It is therefore essential to bleed the fuel system before restarting the engine. On the Defender Td4 2.2 this operation is very simple (see Op 16).

If you also want to change the oil on your Defender, it is best to buy the Td4 service kit (DA6040P) which includes : 1 drain plug (1013938) + 1 oil filter (LR004459) + 1 air filter (PHE500060) + 1 fuel filter (WJI500040).

Remove the fuel filter shield
Op 01
Remove the RH rear wheel (➔ see the tutorial ''Wheel removal on Defender'' Op 01 to 07).

Before working under the vehicle, make sure to secure it properly with jack stands or rigid chocks. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. It is too dangerous.
Op 02
Locate the fuel filter.
Op 03
Unlock the quarter-turn screw of the fuel filter shield. Turn by hand or use the multigrip pliers.
Op 04
Remove the fuel filter shield. Pull by hand.

Install the new fuel filter
Op 08
Thoroughly clean the filter support.
Op 09
Locate the notch in the filter support (1st photo) where the filter boss will be housed (3rd photo).
Op 10
Fit the new fuel filter (WJI500040) on its support :
•
Engage the filter on its support.
•
Place the filter boss in front of the support notch.
•
Push the filter upwards.
•
Turn the filter 1/4 turn.

It is stated in the instructions that you should hear a click at the end of the rotation. I didn't hear anything myself. If you don't hear the click either, it doesn't matter. Turn the filter until it stops.

Bleed the fuel system
Op 16
Bleed the fuel system :
•
Place the ignition key in position 2.
•
The in-tank fuel pump will start for a few seconds.
•
When the pump stops, turn off the ignition.
•
Repeat this operation 4 or 5 times.

Unlike the Defender Td4 2.4, it is unnecessary to invest in a hand pump to bleed the fuel system of the Defender Td4 2.2. Indeed, the Defender Td4 2.2 is equipped with an in-tank fuel pump that does the job.
Op 17
Start the engine.
Check that there are no leaks at the fuel filter.
