Fuel filter change on Defender Td5

Vehicle ➔ Defender 110 Td5 2002
Difficulty ➔ Easy

Time ➔ 30 minutes
Summary

Throughout this intervention on the fuel filter, be careful not to allow any impurities to enter the fuel system. This could damage the injection system.

Changing the fuel filter causes air to enter the fuel system. It is therefore essential to bleed the fuel system before restarting the engine. On the Defender Td5 this operation is very simple
(➔ see Op 17).

On our Defender, we have removed the water sensor from the fuel filter. It's a very fragile component with threads that break easily. On a Defender driving in France, where the fuel filter is changed at each oil change, this sensor is not necessary.
Packaging :
•
ESR4686: The fuel filter is sold individually. It comes with its drain plug.

If you also want to change your Defender's engine oil, it is best to buy the Td5 service kit (DA6004P) which includes : 1 sealing washer (CDU1001L) + 1 oil filter (LPX100590) + 1 rotor oil filter (ERR6299) + 1 air filter (ESR4238) + 1 fuel filter (ESR4686).

Remove the fuel filter shield
Op 01
Remove the RH rear wheel (➔ see the tutorial ''Wheel removal on Defender'' Op 01 to 07).

Before working under the vehicle, make sure to secure it properly with jack stands or rigid chocks. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. It is too dangerous.
Op 02
Locate the fuel filter.
Op 03
Unlock the quarter-turn screw of the fuel filter shield. Turn by hand or use the multigrip pliers.
Op 04
Remove the fuel filter shield. Pull by hand.

The connector you see to the left of the filter is the fuel filter water sensor connector. We removed this sensor because it was very fragile and not essential.
Remove the fuel filter
Op 05
Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel filter.
Op 06
Place a drain pan under the fuel filter.

It is best to place the drain pan above the rear radius arm. Otherwise, the fuel will run onto the radius arm and splash everywhere.
Op 07
Unscrew and remove the fuel filter. Use the filter wrench.

Install the new fuel filter
Op 08
Thoroughly clean the filter support.
Op 09
Check that the drain plug of the new fuel filter (ESR4686) is screwed in tightly. Check by hand.
Op 10
Lightly lubricate the seals of the new fuel filter with engine oil.
Op 11
Screw in the new fuel filter. Tighten firmly by hand.

The tightening torque of the fuel filter is 20 mN.

Never tighten the new filter with the filter wrench.
Fit the fuel filter shield
Op 12
Lightly grease the quarter-turn screw of the fuel filter shield.

This way you won't need pliers during the next removal.
Op 13
Locate the 2 punch marks on the bracket (1st photo) where the 2 pins of the fuel filter shield will be housed (2nd photo).
Op 14
Position the fuel filter shield on its bracket :
•
Engage the 2 front pins of the shield into the punch marks of the bracket.
•
Fold down the shield.
•
Engage the rear pin of the bracket into the punch mark of the shield (3rd photo).
Op 15
Lock the quarter-turn screw. Turn by hand.
Op 16
Put the wheel back in place (➔ see the tutorial ''Wheel removal on Defender'' Op 08 to 15).

Bleed the fuel system
Op 17
Bleed the fuel system :
•
Place the ignition key in position 2.
•
Listen to the sound of the fuel pump (it will be higher pitched than usual).
•
Leave the key in position 2 for a few seconds while the sound of the pump returns to normal or it stops.
•
Turn off the ignition.
•
Repeat this operation 3 or 4 times.

Every time the fuel system has been opened and air has entered, it must be bled before starting the engine.
Op 18
Start the engine.
Check that there are no leaks at the fuel filter.
