MT82 Gearbox oil change on Defender Td4

Summary

This tutorial only concerns the MT82 gearbox of the Defender Td4 (from 2007 to 2016). Previous Defenders are equipped with different gearboxes.

The oil level of the MT82 gearbox is done by volume and not by overflow. You will therefore simply have to inject 2.2 liters of oil into it and close the filler plug. Do not add oil until it overflows from the filler hole (as on the gearboxes of previous Defenders). You could damage your gearbox.

Oil recommended by Land Rover ➔ WSD-M2C200-C manual gearbox oil.

On our Defender Td4, we use this oil ➔ Castrol Syntrax 75W90 API GL-4 WSD-M2C200-C.

Do not use API GL5 oil for the MT82 gearbox. An API GL5 oil is aggressive with copper alloy parts and with coatings of mechanical parts made of copper alloy (eg synchros). This aggressiveness comes from the EP (extreme pressure) additives contained in this oil.

Land Rover recommends draining the MT82 gearbox of the Defender Td4 every 200,000 km.
This really doesn't seem reasonable to us for a vehicle intended for off-roading.
We drain the gearbox of our Defender Td4 every 30,000 km.

Oil volume :
• total gearbox capacity : 2.4 liters
• volume required for draining : 2.2 liters

Before draining, drive a few kilometers to warm up the oil. The oil will then be more fluid and will drain better.

Used oils, brake fluids, seals and filters are hazardous waste for the environment. They must in no circumstances be thrown neither in the natural environment, nor in the sanitation network, nor in household waste. They must be deposited in a recycling center.

On the gearbox, the transfer box and the differentials, the drain and filler plugs do not have a seal. If you have any doubts about their tightness, you can add Teflon (PTFE) tape to their threads before screwing them back in.

Like most of us, for years we used an oil syringe to fill the gearbox, the transfer box and the differentials. We experienced the unpleasantness of seeing the oil run down our forearms while we were under the Defender filling those darn boxes.
That's why we invested about thirty pounds in a transfer pump. Try it and you'll see. It changes your life !

Drain the gearbox oil
Op 01
Locate the gearbox oil filler plug.
Op 02
Clean around the gearbox oil filler plug.
Remove the filler plug. Use the 8 mm allen key.

Removing the filler plug will facilitate the flow of oil.
Op 03
Locate the gearbox drain plug.
Place a drain pan under the gearbox drain plug.
Op 04
Clean around the drain plug.
Remove the drain plug. Use the 8 mm allen key.
Let the oil drain.

The oil and drain plug are very hot. Be careful not to burn yourself.

Add oil
Op 05
Thoroughly clean the drain plug.
Screw in the drain plug. Screw in by hand.
Tighten to a torque of 50 mN. Use the 8 mm Allen socket and the torque wrench.
Op 06
Transfer 1 liter of oil into the transfer pump.
Op 07
Place the nozzle of the transfer pump into the filler hole.
Op 08
Transfer the oil into the gearbox. Pump by hand.
Op 09
Transfer another 1 liter of oil into the transfer pump.

As there was a little oil left at the bottom of the pump can, the oil level is slightly above the 1 liter mark (2nd photo). Nothing abnormal.
Op 10
Transfer the oil back into the gearbox. Pump by hand.
Op 11
Transfer 0.2 liters of oil into the transfer pump.

Check the oil level remaining at the bottom of the pump can (1st photo) and add 0.2 liters (2nd photo).
Op 12
Transfer the oil (0.2 liters) into the gearbox. Pump by hand.

No oil overflows from the gearbox filler hole. This is normal.
Op 13
Thoroughly clean the filler plug.
Screw in the filler plug. Screw in by hand.
Tighten to a torque of 35 mN. Use the 8 mm Allen socket and the torque wrench.
Op 14
Drive a few kilometers with the vehicle.
Check for leaks at the gearbox drain plug.
