Transfer box oil change on Defender Td4

Vehicle ➔ Defender 90 Td4 2013
Difficulty ➔ Easy

Time ➔ 1 hour
Summary

This tutorial only concerns the transfer box of the Defender Td4 (from 2007 to 2016).

The oil level of the Defender Td4 transfer box is done by volume and not by overflow. You will therefore simply have to inject 2.3 liters of oil into it and close the filler plug. Do not add oil until it overflows through the filler hole (as on previous Defenders). You could damage your transfer box.

Oil recommended by Land Rover ➔ SAE 75W90 or SAE 80W90, API GL5, MIL-L-2105-B/C/D.

On our Defender Td4, we use this oil ➔ Total Dual 8 FE 80W90, API GL4/GL5, MIL-L-2105-D.

Land Rover recommends draining the transfer box of the Defender Td4 every 80,000 km.
We drain the transfer box of our Defender Td4 every 30,000 km.
We drain the transfer box of our Defender Td4 every 30,000 km.

Oil volume required for draining : 2.3 liters.

Before draining, drive a few kilometers to warm up the oil. The oil will then be more fluid and will drain better.

Used oils, brake fluids, seals and filters are hazardous waste for the environment. They must in no circumstances be thrown neither in the natural environment, nor in the sanitation network, nor in household waste. They must be deposited in a recycling center.

On the gearbox, the transfer box and the differentials, the drain and filler plugs do not have a seal. If you have any doubts about their tightness, you can add Teflon (PTFE) tape to their threads before screwing them back in.

Like most of us, for years we used an oil syringe to fill the gearbox, the transfer box and the differentials. We experienced the unpleasantness of seeing the oil run down our forearms while we were under the Defender filling those darn boxes.
That's why we invested about thirty pounds in a transfer pump. Try it and you'll see. It changes your life !

Drain the transfer box oil
Op 01
Locate the transfer box oil filler plug.
Op 02
Clean around the transfer box oil filler plug.
Remove the filler plug. Use the 1/2'' ratchet and universal joint.

Removing the oil filler plug will facilitate the flow of oil.
Op 03
Locate the transfer box drain plug.
Place a drain pan under the transfer box drain plug.
Op 04
Clean around the drain plug.
Remove the drain plug. Use the 1/2'' ratchet.
Let the oil drain.

The oil and drain plug are very hot. Be careful not to burn yourself.

Add oil
Op 05
Thoroughly clean the drain plug. Use a cloth.

The drain plug is magnetic. It retains filings. It must be cleaned perfectly before reassembly.
Op 06
Screw in the drain plug. Screw in by hand.
Tighten to a torque of 30 Nm. Use the torque wrench with a 1/2'' drive.
Op 07
Transfer 1 liter of oil into the transfer pump.
Op 08
Place the nozzle of the transfer pump into the filler hole.
Op 09
Transfer the oil into the transfer box. Pump by hand.
Op 10
Transfer another 1 liter of oil into the transfer pump.

As there was a little oil left at the bottom of the pump can, the oil level is slightly above the 1 liter mark (2nd photo). Nothing abnormal.
Op 11
Transfer the oil into the transfer box again. Pump by hand.
Op 12
Transfer 0.3 liters of oil into the transfer pump.

Check the oil level that remains at the bottom of the pump can (1st photo) and add 0.3 liters (2nd photo).
Op 13
Transfer the oil (0.3 liters) into the transfer box. Pump by hand.

No oil overflows from the transfer box filler hole. This is normal.
Op 14
Thoroughly clean the filler plug.
Screw in the filler plug. Screw in by hand.
Tighten to a torque of 30 Nm. Use the torque wrench.

If, like me, your torque wrench does not fit between the transfer box housing and the handbrake drum, use the 1/2'' ratchet and universal joint. Tighten moderately.
Op 15
Drive a few kilometers with the vehicle.
Check for leaks at the transfer box drain plug.
