Vehicle ➔ Defender 110 Td5 2002
Difficulty ➔ Easy

Time ➔ 1 hour
Summary

When the alternator drive belt of your Defender Td5 starts to whistle when starting, it is time to change it.

There are 2 types of alternator drive belts on the Defender Td5 :
• PQS101490: belt for Defender Td5 without air conditioning.
• PQS101500: belt for Defender Td5 with air conditioning.
Our tutorial concerns the Defender Td5 without air conditioning.
• PQS101490: belt for Defender Td5 without air conditioning.
• PQS101500: belt for Defender Td5 with air conditioning.
Our tutorial concerns the Defender Td5 without air conditioning.

This tutorial describes the traditional method for changing the alternator drive belt. This method involves removing the fan and viscous assembly before changing the belt. It is still possible to change the belt without removing the viscous unit. This method is much less practical because access to the belt is complicated, but it avoids investing in the 36 mm spanner needed to remove the viscous unit.

Remove the fan and viscous assembly
Op 01
Remove the acoustic cover (➔ see the tutorial ''Engine oil change on Defender Td5'' Op 05 to 07).
Op 02
Remove the top radiator cowl (➔ see the tutorial ''Viscous fan change on Defender Td5'' Op 02 and 03).
Op 03
Remove the fan and viscous assembly (➔ see the tutorial ''Viscous fan change on Defender Td5'' Op 04 to 07).
Remove the alternator drive belt
Op 04
Locate the alternator drive belt tensioner.
Op 05
Move the belt tensioner. Use the ratchet and 15 mm socket.
Immobilize the ratchet (3rd photo). Use a wire.

To move the tensioner, operate the ratchet counterclockwise.
Op 06
Remove the alternator drive belt. Pull by hand.

Start by moving the belt away from one of the pulleys that does not have a groove. It will be easier.
Op 07
Release the belt tensioner. Remove the ratchet and 15 mm socket.

Fit the alternator drive belt
Op 08
Thoroughly clean the grooves of the various pulleys of the alternator drive belt.

Take the opportunity to check that no pulley is damaged, that they rotate freely and that they have no play (2nd photo).
Op 09
Move the belt tensioner again. Use the ratchet, the 15 mm socket and a wire.
Op 10
Fit the new alternator drive belt (PQS101490) :
•
Under the crankshaft damper pulley (2nd photo).
•
On the tensioner pulley and on the alternator pulley (3rd photo).
•
Under the fan pulley (4th photo).
•
On the 2 pulleys and on the power steering pump pulley (5th photo).

If the belt tensioner is moved to its maximum, the new belt is long enough to be put in place without any difficulty.
Op 11
Check that the belt ribs engage perfectly in the pulley ribs.
Op 12
Release the belt tensioner. Remove the ratchet and 15 mm socket.

Don't forget to remove the wire (3rd photo).
